When the Spaniards came in 1848, Davao was already a melting pot of culture as they saw a community of Bagobos, Mandayas, B’laans, Mansakas, Manobos, Atas, Tagacaolos, Guiangans and the Moros. Don Jose Oyanguren and his group built a Roman Catholic settlement and a small chapel that was named Nueva Vergara, in honor of Oyanguren’s hometown in Spain. This they did after defeating the resisting Moros (or Muslims led by Datu Bago) in the banks of the Davao River. |
